Description of Two Friends

This painting holds much of what I want a painting to say – it is primarily about process and time. The artist starts with pure canvas (shown at the bottom) adding gesso as a ground then sketching in his imagery and finally painting impasto to the finish (shown within the suspended red square).
There are indiscriminately scrawled notes at the edges, phone #s and a short grocery list alluding to the life outside the actual painting. However, in a gallery or museum the finished piece is all we see.
