Description of Fisherman Schooner race 1921

This painting was inspired by the great fishing schooner races between the US and Canada that took place between 1920 and 1938. Unlike the America’s Cup races where they would not race if the wind was more than 20 knots these guys would go out in anything. In this race, the US schooner Elsie was carrying more sail than she could handle in winds of 40 – 45 knots and got her fore topmast and sails blown away. Bluenose to windward (left) lowered her same sails in a show of sportsmanship and beat Elsie anyway.
