PRELIMINARY PLANNING: Mr. Benson will review the needs and concerns of the client about the portrait: its size and proportions, the formality or informality of the setting and a general overview of the client’s ideas and preferences.
INITIAL SITTING: Mr. Benson will sketch a variety of compositions until one embodies those aspects of the portrait that capture the essence of the sitter: pose, body language, a tilt or turn of the head, and a natural position for the hands. At this stage, the presence and input of family members will be helpful to determine when the sitter is being themselves. Reference photos will be taken corresponding to these preliminary sketches. Concluding the sitting, the artist will do a fairly concise drawing of the head to further internalize the subject’s character and likeness.
STUDIO WORK: Back in his studio, Mr. Benson will begin the painting process. As the portrait nears completion he will send several photographs of the piece to the client. If adjustments are requested, they will made. Occasionally a final sitting will be required to complete the portrait.
DELIVERY: The portrait is then enclosed in a custom-built crate and shipped, or, delivered by the artist if the client is within driving distance.
SCHEDULING: Portrait commissions are arranged two months in advance and are generally completed within six months.
